Created with love in Virginia

THE ARTIST
Cynthia Hicks Williams‘s painting style has been described as folk art, early American, primitive, naif, or plain, and one can discover something of each of those genres in her work. When asked to define her style, Willliams says, “The truth is, I just paint what I like and have never paid particular attention to defining my “style.”
She paints only in oils because they “blend best for me and allow me the time to paint slowly. That way I can pay attention to all the details in my work and have time to enjoy the creative process.” The artist wants the viewer to “walk into the landscape, or the subject’s mind, and experience what is depicted on the canvas. To feel the cold wind blowing the snowflakes, to smell the fire in the chimney or the sweet grass underfoot. To imagine what is happening inside the house or on the other side of the barn, to feel the warmth of the sun.” She continues, “My paintings reflect simpler times when life was happening at a slower pace, and I hope they invite the viewer to step into them and enjoy that moment in time.”
Williams’s work hangs in homes and offices all across Virginia, north to Maine, south to Florida, and as far west as Colorado. She currently lives and works in Richmond, Virginia.
